March 16, 2022. Blind? Using The COREFtp Transfer Program

: If you are using a Windows based computer, COREFtp is quite easy to use even from the blind side using an audio screenreader. Let me help you along using COREFtp with this tutorial. Go for the free version COREFtp Lite. Plenty good enough for your needs. I've been using for over a decade.
COREFtp Link: www.coreftp.com/download.html.
COREFtp is a file transfer program used to transfer files from the local drive of your computer to the drive on a web server. Most use to transfer files for a web presence, such as a website you maintain. You can also upload full-blown web tools like the content management system Wordpress. Let's get hopping!

However, let me step back one second. In this post, I refer to a free hosting service, Infinity.

I use this service to host one of my domains, which has more information (and, programs I have installed on my server directory) as well as other observations. Link: www.billywhitecane.com.

If this interests you, check out their website. Link: www.infinityfree.net.
  1. You don't need to learn a bunch of keyboard commands to use COREFtp with an audio screenreader. Blind, that is a necessity for me. I can do this. You can too!

If you know where the tab, arrow, enter, alt and application keys are on your keyboard, you've got it made. I use a USG full-size keyboard with my laptop for ease of use.

The tab key is used to move along a road that will move you between two windows, the local side of your computer and the Ftp side of your server. Keep tabbing and you go around in circles.
  2. Before this program is of any use, you will need to connect to your host server. The information you need will be provided by your server host. Let me go through the fundamentals.

You need host server information. You should get this information when you sign-up with your host. Additionally, you may well find good information in their FAQ and Help pages. Saying all this, there are only four boxes most likely you'll have to fill out within COREFtp. One good thing? You fill out once, it is saved. Next time just tap on the name you have provided and boom, you connect!

When COREFtp opens, tap the alt key and you will find a file list. Tap "Connect" to start operations.

First, Your Name (can be anything) which will show up as the link to tap and connect. I always make it the name of my domain. At least, for me that makes the operation simple.

Second, Host IP. This might be ftp dot something, or, in the case of Infinity, something else altoghether. That's why it's important to read what your host has provided.

Third, username. This is provided by your server host.

Fourth, password. This is provided by your server host.

Don't change anything else, unless you are given directions to do so. tab down to connect and if done correctly, boom, you're in!
  3. The local disk side (files on your computer) will be the first window you will come across after connecting to your server. COREFtp will call out "local" and you will probably know as much because of the directory size given.

Simply start tabbing. When you hear "combo box" tab once more and you will hear "button" which is what you want. Now tap enter on your keyboard.

You will then be presented with a list of files on your local drive. Just use the up and down arrows to hear the list.

At the top of the list you will hear "dot dot" and if you tap enter, will be presented with a list of directories one level up from those files.

Note that I have most files on my desktop, so one of those possibilities is "desktop" and if you have just finished a file and saved to your desktop, probably will need to go up one level, tap on desktop so that file can be found in the list.

OK, let's move along. Remember, tab is your way to move between the two windows.
  4. Just start tabbing, even if you are in a directory list. You will hear "edit star" just before you get to the Ftp online server side.

On the Ftp side as you tab will come to list. That's what you want. Downarrow through the list and you will find all of your directory files.

What you find depends on the host you use. Most hosts have a link in the list called "public HTML" or "www" or both. Some are a bit different, including a free host that I also use besides my paid server. If you use "infinity" you will find the following. When first opening, down arrow to "htdocs" and that will open the list of files in your directory on the "infinity" server.

When there, a few hints. If you hit the application key on your keyboard, arrow down and you will be given the choice of "directory command" and if you hit enter another choice, "makenew directory" and if you hit enter, will be given a text box to make a new directory (folder) in which you can add files. When done naming the folder, hit enter on your keyboard again and the folder will now show up in your online directory. Tap on the folder and it will open. You can then upload files or delete from the folder as wanted.

You probably noted other operations other than directory command when tapping the application key on your keyboard such as edit and delete. Yes, you can edit the name of your folders and file names as well as delete them.

Let's say you name the folder "audio" you can then transfer audio files from your local drive to your online directory folder. To connect to this folder, simply put the following into your internet browser address bar, something like, www.yourdomain.com/audio/ and bingo, there is the directory folder with your audio files. Tap on one and if you have an audio player installed on your computer the file will start playing.

Common directory folders are audio, images and so forth. Of course, you can upload HTML web files as well. Note that a file named index.htm or default.htm will open as the default file for the directory and folders.

I also make it a point to never use capital letters, just lowercase. Never have to second guess how directory folders and file names are spelled.
  5. Now that you know your way around, how about transfering those files? That is simple. You can do this in either direction. Transfer files from your local directory on your computer to your Online directory or the other way around.

You simply need to focus on the file (when your audio screenreader calls it you are focused). Then simply tap your "application" key on your keyboard, arrow down to either upload or download, depending on which way you are transferring and then tap "enter" on your keyboard. Easy-peasy!

If, by chance, you are uploading a duplicate file name, a window will pop up giving you choices, either to accept or cancel.
That's it, although, if I get around to it, will do a Youtube video in the future. Stay tuned. Enjoy!

I'll end with another suggestion, although, not in my wheel-house. Another possibility is Filezilla. This free file transfer program is available for Windows, Mac and Linux. I have never used this program, however, here's the link if you want to try. Link: www.filezilla-project.org.

January 18, 2022. The New Tiny Site

: You are looking at it! You've heard of Tiny Home? Well, here is Tiny Site for the WEB! This is really a small footprint. Without any content, the program (including the opening page and the individual blog/twitter pages comes in at less than 300 Kb! The pages are password protected and it is simple enought to add content, since it is simply text based. You can even write content ahead of time in notepad, copy and paste into the blog. Note that I am using Doctype-4, since Doctype-5 does not support the "center" or "font" tags which I still use in my simple content writing without any CSS. That's my call here! Onward and Upward! Later!
